RE: Status of Florida 2012 Legislative Session
Dear Florida Members:
On March 23, 2012, the legislative session in Florida adjourned. I am pleased to report that although the deregulation of interior design was proposed at the Committee level this session the item did not advance.
This ended the effort to deregulate the interior design profession in the state for the 2012 legislative session. I think that it is also important to note that since the deregulation effort has now failed in two consecutive sessions it is unlikely (although possible) that deregulation will be pursued in the near future.
The successful prevention of the deregulation movement in Florida was the result of much hard work by ASID members, volunteers, staff and other stakeholders. During the course of the year ASID chapters held two political fundraisers in Fort Lauderdale and Jacksonville and many direct contacts with key public officials locally and in Tallahassee. ASID staff visited the state on several occasions attending committee hearings and conducting over 30 in-person meetings with elected officials.
The efforts were facilitated by our in-state consultants (Akerman Senterfitt) who were invaluable in guiding our strategy forward. They monitored the issue and met weekly (sometimes daily) with legislators and committee staff in support of the current licensing program.
It is important to note that although the deregulation effort failed, HB 517 the Reducing and Streamlining Regulations Act did pass into law. This bill modified the education provisions for many professions, including interior designers. You may review the changes by following this link. http://myfloridahouse.gov/Sections/Bills/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=47704
ASID staff wishes to thank all of the ASID Florida Members for their commitment and hard work to uphold the regulatory laws in the state. We look forward to continuing our partnership with our three Florida chapters and other stakeholders in the years ahead.
Best Regards,
Don Davis
